The manufacturing and transportation fields are the ones that spread across many different industries and functions.

Several different types of industrial weighing scales are built to meet the needs of your business use. Our industrial weigh scale guide will go over the most common FAQs to help you make a better decision when it comes to buying a new weigh scale from Active Scale

How do I pick the right balance or scales?

Always remember your three Rs: Range, Readability, and Requirements.

Range – You need to figure out the minimum and maximum capacities required for your applications. If you are going to be sharing the balance, consider what your colleague’s range requirements might also be.

ReadabilityAlso known as resolutions or decimal places. You need to figure out how many decimal places you need to measure or report out to.

RequirementsYou need to figure out if your protocol, applications or method require special requirements?

Here are some generic questions that will help you determine if you have special requirements:

  1. What are you going to be weighing? Will it be a sensitive, small or big sample type? Is it susceptible to static interference, or will there be a highly viscous product that needs environmental filters?
  2. What environment will you be using the weigh scale in, like the lab, factory, or out in the field?
  3. Do you have any special needs to transfer data or a need to print or export data?
  4. Are there any regulatory requirements you need to comply with?
  5. Will you require Legal for Trademarks like Measure Canada marking?
  6. Will you wash it down or need it to be dustproof?

The answers to the questions mentioned above should help guide you to the proper specifications for your new weighing scale.

What weight do I need to use for calibration?

Calibration weights are listed in the technical specifications section of the datasheet and the Instruction manual that comes with the weigh scale.

As per the guideline, two different weights are recommended when calibrating your balance or scale: a large weight that tests the eccentricity of the balance and a small weight that will test for repeatability.

Now, when it comes to selecting these weights, the larger weight should have a mass that is equal to the capacity of the weighing equipment and a smaller weight that is approximately 5% of the nominal capacity of the balance.

Do you have a calibration service?

Yes, we provide 24/7 weigh scale calibration services.

Also, Active Scale is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board certifying that Active Scale Manufacturing Inc. meets the technical competency and documenting requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for calibration of weighing devices. You can view our calibration certificate here

How Can I Identify an Authorized Truck Scale Service Provider?

The first thing you need to do is research. If you are a business that purchases or sells products based on a specific weight or quantity, it is vital to hire an ASP to inspect and certify your truck scale.

Measurement Canada launched its “Spot the Sticker” initiative (as shown in the image below) to help businesses and consumers decide on a truck scale service provider. You can read our blog on authorized truck scale providers for more information.
